Nilai University's Convocation 2024 took place on Saturday, 28 September 2024 celebrating the achievements of graduates from various levels—postgraduates, undergraduates, and foundation students. The event was led by Chancellor Professor Emeritus Tengku Dato’ Shamsul Bahrin and Vice-Chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr. Azhar Ismail, showcasing the university’s dedication to preparing graduates for the challenges ahead.
“It is important to remember our roots and stand up for what we believe in,” said the Chancellor. He shared lessons from his career as an academic, reminding graduates to keep moving forward against the trials and tribulations ahead. He stressed that success comes from planning our future and making a powerful impact with the influence that we have.
Tiew Ying Ying, the Valedictorian of the Class of 2024 and a First-Class graduate in Software Engineering (Honours), reflected on the university’s motto, “Enrichment for Life.” She explained, “This motto has guided us—not just in gaining knowledge, but in developing life skills as well.” In addition to her academic success, Ying Ying who led several student organisations also brought pride to Nilai University as she won the Global Hackathon Championship in 2023. She encouraged her fellow graduates to focus on both academics and extracurricular activities, saying that skills like strategising and high level problem-solving will be essential as they start their careers.
With the rapid growth of digitalisation around the world, the need for cross-border communication skills, and agility in a post-pandemic recovery, Nilai University’s graduates are utterly ready to stand out. One of the honourable guests and Nilai University’s industry advisor, Ts. Ricky Liew pointed out that more than half of his company’s employees are alumni of Nilai University. The Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Manager of SA Aviation Sdn. Bhd. praised the university for producing graduates who are eager to learn and grow, and advised them to seek further certifications to boost their career opportunities.
Foo Shelly, a graduate of Mechanical Engineering with Honours and Winner of the Board of Engineers Malaysia President Award, gave advice to students facing the pressures of their Final Year Projects. “Don’t let failure get you down,” she said. “Take breaks, and keep trying until you succeed.” This relatable message is a helpful reminder that success often comes through persistence.
The convocation was a proud day for the graduates, their families, and everyone involved. With the support of esteemed guests and industry partners, the event celebrated the hard work and dedication of Nilai University’s students.
Congratulations to the Class of 2024! We look forward to welcoming you back on campus and seeing the phenomenal impact you will have in the future.
