"Employers look for people who can bring change to a company. They do not want someone who needs to be taught everything." This was the advice given by Melvin Chan who spoke to final year students at Nilai University College (Nilai UC).
The talk by Chan who is the Founder and Managing Director of Talent Edge Solutions Sdn Bhd, a human capital development consultancy organization, is one of the many initiatives organized by the Career and Industry Placement Unit to educate soon-to-be graduates about the expectations of the working world.
During the talk, Chan engaged the audience with games to illustrate the importance of using critical thinking for problem solving.
Chan also reminded graduates that they must never be a victim of this world because it will only lead to feelings of guilt and depression - ultimately sealing one's own failure. He concluded with a quote, "Employment is like an ocean and getting the right job or a perfect employee is like finding a coral from the sea. Both employer and employee need to look deeply and research hard in order to make the right choice".
Nilai UC has integrated into its curriculum a compulsory industry placement module for its students. "Internship is an important part of a student's learning process because it prepares the student for what is waiting in the real-world. It is also a good opportunity for employers to pick out prospective employees," affirms Zalina Abdul Rahman, Manager of Career and Industry Placement at Nilai UC. Nilai UC currently has placed students in over 100 companies in Malaysia and around the region.
