Feb 27, 2013: The Nilai University Students’ Representative Council (SRC) hosted a luncheon with the Management of the University in February 27th. The event gave both parties a chance to exchange notes in a casual setting.
The luncheon commenced with SRC Events Moderator, Mr Saravanan Uthayachanthiran highlighting the events which the SRC committee had undertaken since they took office in August last year. SRC President, Chiduku Michael Simbarashe then thanked the management for the support towards the SRC and highlighted that his team was keen to do more to represent the students.
In his speech, Datuk Dr Megat Burhainuddin, President and Vice-Chancellor of Nilai University reminded the SRC that it was key for the Council to encourage student participation in the various events organized by the University and by the Ministry of Higher Education. He stressed that book learning alone is not enough and one can only mature if he keeps himself well-connected with what goes on around him.
Datuk Megat also mentioned that the Management welcomes feedback especially input that will bring positive development to the curriculum of the programmes at the University. “The University will support the students in whatever they need to give them a comfortable life during their study here and to prepare them for the challenges in the working world,” he added.
Following the President’s speech, was a Q&A session where the SRC raised various issues and concerns to Vice-Presidents for their responses.The luncheon was attended by the 17-member Students’ Representative Council. Also present at the event was Prof Dato’ Dr Sothi Rachagan (Vice President of Academic Affairs), Dr Woo Kok Yoong (Vice President of Administration), Mr Raymond Victor (Vice-President Marketing and Business Development), Deans of schools, Directors and Heads of Department.
Nilai University is amongst the first private institution of higher learning to hold a Student’ Representatives Council election each May. Each Academic School nominates their representatives and elected nominees will represent their respective schools on the council.
The function of the SRC council members are as follows:-
- Provide a link between students and the management to source for any request, problem or need that rises from students.
- Strive to aid the management in improving the University's service for the welfare and benefits of students.
- Plan events that are able to encourage better relations among other students as well as to promote positive culture to encourage greater student participation
in co-curricular activities - Other responsibilities include providing moral support and providing assistance to all clubs and societies.
Students can meet up with the SRC members at the SRC Office located next to MAX Centre, anytime between 10am and 5pm during regular weekdays (Except near or during examination week.)
