Nilai University (Nilai U) will host school leavers and their parents at its upcoming Open Day (29-30 March 2014) and this represents a great opportunity for them to experience the institution’s ‘Enrichment for Life’ philosophy first hand. “We understand that it can be quite intimidating and confusing for young school leavers facing a myriad of choices,” says Aileen Anthony Sinniah, Head of Nilai U’s Business Development Unit. “The Open Day is the perfect opportunity for everyone involved to feel the campus and to get to know more about the programmes on offer.”
More pertinently, it allows for school leavers and parents to have quality face time with the relevant Deans, Heads of Departments and lecturers. “Do not underestimate the importance of meeting the teachers as this allows you to hear firsthand how the teaching of a programme is going to be conducted. You will be able to ask questions and also sit for a ‘personality test’ that will help determine your areas of strength,” counsels Aileen.

One of the toughest decisions facing school leavers and their parents is deciding on which programme to enrol in, and at what level – pre-university, diploma or degree? The aforementioned personality test should go some way towards narrowing the choices down but it is best if more thorough research is carried out. For instance, the personality test may reveal that a student has the right aptitude for the Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering programme. Next step would be to seek out the lecturers from that Department as well as students who will be manning a booth at the President Hall during the Open day. By doing so, they will find out that students in this programme must be willing to get their hands dirty and know how to work with heavy tools and machinery. They will also need to be strong in both mathematics and physics to be able to pass the required examinations. “Do not be afraid to ask questions and to find out if the programme is suitable,” says Aileen. “We do not want students to make the wrong choices as a change later on will be time consuming and expensive.”
A pre-university programme in Nilai U’s Centre for Foundation Studies is ideal for those who want to be fast tracked into a degree programme of their choice. School leavers who do not have the required results can opt for the diploma route where they can continue into the second year of the relevant degree programme after successfully completing their diplomas. The advantage of such a move is that diploma students will already be very familiar with a number of modules allowing them to absorb lessons better and flourish in their degree programmes. “Such an advantage will make the slightly longer study period seem negligible. This is an example of the useful info that school leavers and their parents can gain from speaking to lecturers and counsellors at our Open Day,” Aileen points out.
