Students from IEP show the progress they have made with Spelling Bee.
Once again, the challenge to find the best speller was on, and this time, the Spelling Bee saw a turnout of close to a hundred spectators and participants at the S502 auditorium on 17 March, 2010. With the arrival of the Dean of School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Shariffah Bahyah, and the Head of Department of Languages, Subashini R, the competition started with a welcome note from our student emcee, Hani Jawa of Intensive English Programme.
Prior to this competition, participants have gone through many days of practice in familiarising themselves with the rules of contest, as well as projecting and spelling words that they may encounter on this very day. As the competition continued, it was evident that the students' hard work had paid off. This year, according to the organisers, the number of words covered by the pronouncers are significantly more, reaching a higher level of difficulty, than that of last year's competition
This was no doubt the achievement of the 30 participants who represented the 3 levels of Intensive English Progamme; Basic, Elementary, and Intermediate. The crowd clapped and cheered when participants were able to spell the given words correctly, and it was quite obvious that the audience too had their favorite candidates. After almost two hours of suspense and anxiety over the increasing difficulty of given words, six students emerged as winners. There were three first prize winners, Nang Kham Rwee (Myanmar) from Intermediate B, Toktarova Aiya (Kazakhstan) from Elementary B, and Rodrigo Nguenid Ondo ( Equatorial Guinea) from Basic. The runner ups were Nguyen Pham Khanh An(Vietnam), Lugazo Ardnuya Lucindo (Equatorial Guinea), and Nawaf AbdulAziz (Saudi Arabia), from Intermediate A, Elementary B, and Basic respectively.
All the candidates also received certificates for their show of team spirit and active participation in the competition. Congratulations to all!
