Four astronauts attended the Campus Space Walk at Nilai University College held in conjunction with the XXIII Planetary Congress, 5-10 October 2010 in Kuala Lumpur. The event themed 1 Planet, 1 Hope, 1 Future was jointly organised by The Ministry of Higher Education, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and the Association of Space Explorers.
The astronauts present were Klaus-Dietrich Flade (Germany), Vladimir Lyakhov (Russia), Sergei Treshchov (Russia) and Donald E. Williams (USA). In the 2-hour event they took turns sharing their experience in space, answered question and signed autographs for the students from Nilai University College, Nilai International School and the Sapura Smart School.

Sergei Treshchov from Russia said that, "When we are in space, sleeping is something that we don't even think of. Everything seems so interesting at the space station." | Don Williams of the USA shared his experience on how he was involved in the exploration of the planet Jupiter and several other experiments. He also said that while growing up he liked to watch science fiction movies and was always intrigued by Space. When asked what his favorite science fiction movie was, he answered 2001: A Space Odyssey the 1968 epic science fiction film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. |
Klaus-Dietrich Flade from Germany and also the leader of the team of astronauts said that the feeling of weightlessness was something that he really enjoyed. He took the audience through a documentary featuring his time in space where he explained how day-to-day tasks such as eating, sleeping and staying clean and healthy was done on board the space shuttle. The fact that Klaus was trained as an aircraft mechanic was a motivation the many Aircraft Maintenance Engineering students who attended the event that their ambition of going to space may not be that far from reach. |
