Towards a Sound Future

Could you quickly make sense out of numbers and enjoy working with numbers? Accounting and Finance are vital areas in managing the monetary resources of businesses. The area of Accounting is more focused on regularly managing and recording financial reports which abide by standard principles and processes. Finance is an area which focuses on growth projection or control based on the same financial statements and records.

Seh Rong Yao, a final-year student, studying the Diploma of Accounting mentioned there are four aspects to accounting: Taxation, Financial Accounting, Management Accounting and Auditing. After a while, he discovered a keen interest in taxation as it relates closely to compliance with statutory laws.

“I studied in the Science stream, so all the accounting terminologies were new to me. The consistent support from the lecturers inspired me to continue learning,” Rong explained.

Ryan Tan Xin Jie, a final year student in the B.A. (Hons) in Finance, quickly chipped in and mentioned that he felt at ease in asking questions during lectures. Ryan received a full scholarship from the Sin Chew Daily Education Fund to further his studies. He completed his Foundation in Science, and in due course discovered he would prefer a people-oriented career. Hence, after consulting his lecturers, he opted to pursue the B.A. (Hons) in Finance.

Rong shared the same sentiments and mentioned he had received a lot of support and guidance from his lecturers. While, Pavihtra Nandini, a sophomore year student felt she had a flair in Accounting and Finance. Naturally, she selected to pursue B. A. (Hons) in Accounting and Finance, where she enjoys learning the principles and concepts in both fields.

Nilai University offers both diploma and degree programmes in these two specialised fields. The diploma programme focuses on Accounting while students progressing to a degree could choose their area of specialisation either in Accounting or a combination of Accounting and Finance. The undergraduate programmes offered are:

  • Diploma in Accounting
  • B.A. (Hons) in Accounting and Finance
  • B.B.A.(Hons) in Finance

Students could complete the Diploma in Accounting in 2 years and the degree programmes in 3 years. Graduates from both degree programmes could get exemptions from professional bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (ICAEW) and Malaysian Financial Planning Council (MFPC).

“The learning environment at Nilai University is multi-faceted. Students will need to fulfil three co-curriculum projects during their first year. We would motivate students to think out of the box and cultivate the right skills to implement their ideas logically. Also, I would relentless remind them to meticulous check their work. We would want to instil in them the virtues of integrity and accountability,” mentioned Dr Nor.

“For example, our students will join field trips and workshops organised by the School of Accounting and Finance. Recently, we organised a visit to the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange, and several workshops on Auto Count, AXP Audit and Fintech for the students,” informed Dr Nor.

“Yes, when I joined the foundation programme earlier, I was an introvert, but later a senior asked me to take up a Public Relations position. I was surprised that I enjoyed interacting with other students. It changed my perception of my ability to interact,” declared Ryan.

“It was the same for me. Initially, I kept to myself and thought the job as an accountant would best suit me. I thought crunching numbers would contend me. However, to my surprise, I discovered that I love learning Accounting and Finance principles, especially Management Accounting. The passion I have for Management Accounting motivates me to be curious and eager to learn about developments in this field. I felt encouraged to speak up and ask questions,” explained Nandini. Under the guidance of her lecturer, Nandini has set her sights on pursuing the CIMA professional qualification.

Nandini confessed she acts like her mom’s financial advisor, guiding her mom to invest securely for retirement. “I choose this programme in Accounting and Finance because I find it fun to budget and monitor my finances. Also, along the way, I had discovered that I have a neck in analysing financial reports and translating to solutions,” shared Nandini.

Conducive Study Environment

“I wanted to be close to home,” confessed Nandini, who is from Nilai, Negeri Sembilan. While her varsity mates, Rong and Ryan preferred the quiet and blissful environment at the University.

“Initially, I had visited another university before enrolling for the foundation programme here. As I sat in for the interview, I could hear the hustle and bustle of city streets. I didn’t think the environment was suitable if I wanted to focus on my studies,” clarified Ryan.

Coincidently, Rong’s mother was browsing through the newspapers and noticed an advertisement on Nilai University. When he visited Nilai University’s campus, he was impressed with the pleasant learning environment, surrounded by lush greenery.
