“Dale Carnegie’s methodology and techniques are designed in a way that every individual will have the opportunity to improve themselves in the five drivers of success,” says Jasmine Ng, Dale Carnegie Trainer, who was conducting her first lesson at Nilai University (Nilai U).The ‘five drivers of success’ are increased self-confidence, strengthened interpersonal skills, enhanced communication skills, developed leadership skills and improved attitude.
Nilai U is the first private higher education institution to offer Dale Carnegie’s Skills for Success course to improve students’ social skills.”I hope to improve the students’ interpersonal and communication skills. I’d like to see them build strong relations with people. This will help them build promising careers,” says Ng.
Response from the students was overwhelming as they enthusiastically participated in the activities. The class is not the typical lecture-listen methodology. Instead students are encouraged to speak up and voice their opinions. “I enjoy group activities for each topic of discussion,” said Deepaphriya Nagaraju, a BSc (Hons) in Biotechnology programme student who joined the Dale Carnegie course to help improve her communication skills and to boost her self-confidence.
Nur Amirah Rosli (BBA (Hons) in Marketing) found the course refreshing since it inspires self-motivation.“I am studying marketing which would necessitate me dealing with lots of people. I hope to learn how best to convince potential clients through my ideas and communication skills,” she said. “I love all the activities, especially the presentation by the students.”
Students who successfully complete the 12-session Dale Carnegie course will receive a certificate from Dale Carnegie Training. Such certification is part of Nilai U’s efforts to provide students with added competitive edge in the employment market. Such courses are also vital in the institution’s efforts to produce well-rounded graduates who are academically proficient and socially confident.
