It’s an age-old debate. The battle of the sexes. But at this year’s Nilai University College-Oxford Brookes University, it was two-one to the ladies as the top academic prizes for the year all went to the fairer sex while the male representative top scored in a single subject. This year’s batch happens to be the largest group of graduates yet and this made it all the more special for the prizewinners to have been selected from such a large pool of talent.
Jillian Tan Sue-Im was all smiles and positive vibes at the graduation ceremony as she was named Nilai University College’s (Nilai UC) Valedictorian for the Class of 2009. Having graduated with First Class honours in her Marketing and Management degree, she attributed her success to hard work and the guidance she received from Nilai UC lecturers. She also points to her inquiring nature which helped her learn more during classes.
"Never be afraid to ask questions. You'll be surprised as to how much you can discover by asking just one question. Lecturers are always there to help and they're always pleased when students enquire," says Jillian.
Nilai UC President Tengku Shamsul Bahrin also commended Jillian for her active involvement in the editorial board of Nilai UC’s newsletter – Explorer. In his speech, Tengku Shamsul went on to say he hoped more students would emulate Jillian and make use of the facilities available outside of the classroom.
Also doing the ladies proud is Koh Wai Jean who graduated with First Class Honours in the Accounting and Finance degree programme. She was awarded the Graham Upton Award for her achievements. The Graham Upton award is an annual award honouring Prof Gaham Upton who served as the Vice-Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University from 1997-2007. The award consists of a book prize worth RM1,000, certificate and a plaque.
"Much credit has to go to the Nilai UC lecturers for their support and encouragement. They were ever willing to help with our studies and answer queries regarding assignments. Additionally, the campus environment is conducive for facilitating the learning process as all the surrounding greenery provides peace of mind. I used to go swim in Nilai Springs Golf and Country Club with my friends whenever I need to unwind after a hectic day of studies and activities," explains Koh with a smile underlining the immense pride at winning the Graham Upton award.

The sole male representative was Lee Tze Choong who was awarded the BDO Binder prize. This prize is awarded for the most outstanding achievement in the Financial Accounting Theory paper of the BA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance.
"The quality education I received here and the bachelor degree in accounting and finance will create a pathway to enter the corporate world. Never did I imagine winning this prize but it will definitely look good on my CV," says a visibly emotional Lee as he poses for pictures with family and friends.
The three high achievers aside, this was the largest graduation ceremony yet and reflected the continuous growth that Nilai UC has made. “We are always striving to give the best options to students academically as well as the best environment for them to pursue their ambitions. The ever-growing number of graduates is testament to our efforts as parents place their trust in us to ensure we bring out the best in their offspring,” says Gan Eng Hong, Nilai UC Chief Executive. “The public can expect these graduates today to be well-rounded individuals who will be assets to the workforce.”
Last word has to go to Jillian Tan in her speech as Class Valedictorian said, “In the course of our long journey, we reached many crossroads which have taken us to different paths. When faced with adversity we should remain steadfast and strong. Don’t let the regrets of yesterday destroy our hopes and dreams of tomorrow.” That was soon followed by plenty of mortarboard flinging and congratulatory hugs as the Nilai UC graduates enjoyed what is a milestone in their lives.
