Nilai University Championing Fencing

Nilai, 12 January 2017 - Nilai University announced today that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with 15 national fencing associations and clubs and 1 international fencing school. The associations and clubs are the Federal Territory Amateur Fencing Association, Persatuan Lawan Padang Amatur Melaka, Persatuan Lawan Padang Pulau Pinang, Sabah Fencing Association, Selangor Amateur Fencing Association, Bekking Fencing Academy, BLADE Fencing Club, GA Fencing, Jung Fencing Academy, SWASHBUCKLERS Fencing Club, TOUCHE Fencing Club, Trinity D Fencing Club, USJ Fencing Centre, X Fencing Academy and Z Fencing. The Hong Kong Fencing School is the international school which is collaborating with Nilai University. Present at this signing ceremony was Col. Associate Hazally bin Jali, under secretary in the sports division, Ministry of Higher Education and En. Ruzli bin. Zairazi, Secretary General of MASISWA, Majlis Sukan IPTS Malaysia.

This MoU is to establish a basis of corporation between all parties for the purpose of strengthening, promoting and developing the sports of Fencing in Malaysia. The clubs and associations intend to support each other in tournaments and championships by providing fencing professionals, administrative sta, logistics and nancial support. They will also work together to organise fencing coaching and referee courses for members and the public.

Nilai University is the only private university in Malaysia to be given the Sports Focus Centre (Pusat Sukan Tumpuan) title by the Sports Division, Ministry of Higher Education and they are making the facility available to these clubs for events and activities. In his opening remark, the Vice Chancellor of Nilai University, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Sothi Rachagan said,” We launched the Sports Focus Centre for Fencing at Nilai University in 2014 and the Ministry of Education, Sports Division has been very supportive in believing that Nilai University can help mould well rounded individuals who will positively contribute to society”.

At the Memorandum of Understanding ceremony, Prof Dato’ Dr. Sothi Rachagan thanked the Presidents, owners, founders, directors and coaches from the state associations and clubs for making this event possible and working towards bringing this niche fencing sport to a wider audience.

After the signing ceremony, the guests of honour Col. Associate Hazally bin Jali and Prof Dato’ Dr. Sothi Rachagan launched the 1st ASEAN University Fencing Championship which will take place at Nilai University from the 9th to the 12th of March 2017.
