Cloud computing has become the current catchphrase and is not only a trend. Stated in the New Straits Times, June 2018; Malaysia is ranked 14th in preparedness to adopt cloud computing services, according to the 2018 BSA Global Computing Scorecard.
Technology is changing the world economically, pushing boundaries and disrupting the conventional way we conduct businesses. Ultimately, impacting the social dynamics of society.
The benefits and potential of cloud computing are tremendous. With the exponential advances of technology, business agility is vital to stay ahead. No doubt, the nature of jobs we see today, may alter dramatically.
“Job tasks will change, and new kinds of jobs may be created. As internet penetration increases with mobile access, there will be further expectations for speed and security of connectivity at a reasonable fee. As of now, cloud computing seems to be a cost-effective and efficient platform. There will be an upward trajectory demand of cloud-based skills specialist,” said Dr Abbas Mehdizadeh, Associate Professor from the School of Computing.
Academic Journey
The Bachelor of Information Technology (Hons) in Internet Engineering and Cloud Computing (BIECC) offered at Nilai University equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to plan, design, implement, manage and maintain computer networking of cloud and Internet as well as their security.
“In the first year, we will introduce students to the concepts of internet engineering and cloud computing. They should fully grasp these concepts. It will help them in the planning and design stage later in the BIECC programme,” explained Puan Harlina Binti Harun, the Head of the School of Computing.
“Students will work on actual cloud projects. This BIECC programme is unique. We focus on adopting various technologies in a cloud environment supporting cloud-based solutions,” added Dr Abbas.
Some courses that students are required to familiarise and undertake are; Object-oriented software development; Software Securities; Artificial Intelligence; E-commerce; Software Project Management and a few more.
Career Prospects
William Chu Zi Ming, a recent graduate of BIECC, was ecstatic when he nailed a permanent position as a Network Engineer with a company providing extensive IT solutions. “After completing my Diploma In Computer Science at Nilai University, I started to research about Cloud Computing. After comprehensive research on this area, I was convinced that cloud computing will be popular in Malaysia,” said William.
“I am thrilled to receive a job offer before the end of my internship. I think the knowledge gained in the course of software project management gave me a head start in performing my job well,” admits William.
“Most likely, graduates of BIECC will be employed as IT or Cloud Engineers or consultants. Other opportunities are available in the fields of networking software engineering, database management, systems engineering, and data centre operations. A graduate could expect a long list of career possibilities as network engineers, cloud designer, software engineer, product manager, solutions consultants, test engineer, platform developer, application developer and server developers in SAAS, IAAS and PAAS companies,” mentioned Dr Abbas.
Entry Requirement
The entry requirements for BIECC are as outlined:
- STPM or equivalent: 2Cs and credit in SPM Mathematics
- UEC: 5Bs including Mathematics
Dr Abbas remarked that students undertaking BIECC, cloud computing course will focus on having two distinct objectives:
- Cloud Computing Design
Enable students to describe the standards in building cloud solutions. They will map private cloud services and offerings suitable for business needs and solutions for IT related issues. Finally, students should determine that the solution is the best solution and addresses all parameters. - Implementation of Cloud Computing Solution
Students would create a private could solution and implement specific cloud technologies and offerings that could be employed in the solution created.
“Upon completing the BIECC programme, graduates will have a complete understanding of cloud computing concepts. They could address the requirements, comprehend perspective from consumer and provider when developing cloud environments, and evaluate cloud solution architecture,” Dr Abbas clearly stated.
The future in Cloud
According to the report by NST in April 2019, by 2025 GSMA Intelligence forecasted, there will be 1.2 billion 5G connections worldwide. Approximately 40 percent of the world population and 675 million people in Asia Pacific will have access to 5G network. Further, in the same report, our Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir envisioned that Malaysia would leverage on a 5G technology within three years.
Dr Abbas felt with the arrival of 5G technologies, ICT networks will bring forth a global digital society with the possibility of achieving near-instantaneous connectivity. There will be further demand from ever increasing Internet of Things (IoT) devices such as 5th Generation Cloud Radio Access Networks, or 5G C-RAN. These devices run on cloud computing technology to the RAN architecture. In short, there will be abundant opportunities for graduates equipped with cloud computing know-how.
