Nilai UC is offering scholarships to outstanding athletes and students with impressive extra-curricular credentials. The criteria for grant of scholarships have been widened.
"Our philosophy has always been to produce well-rounded graduates. We want our students to excel in their chosen academic field as well as have the soft skills derived from participating in extra curricular activities," says Nilai University College (Nilai UC) President, Professor Emeritus Tengku Dato' Shamsul Bahrin. "It makes sense for us to use our scholarship schemes to reward school leavers with similar attributes."
The soft skills competency of graduates has become a national concern. Society demands that institutions of higher education produce human capital that meets the needs of a rapidly changing environment. The Government wants graduates to be well rounded, intelligent and emotionally skillful. Nilai UC's industry partners look for graduates not only with knowledge and technical expertise but also the ability to easily fit into the work environment and know the value of teamwork. Nilai UC has revised its scholarship schemes to reflect this.
"Our industry partners have told us that academic success is not the only criteria they look for in graduates. Skills that are honed outside the classrooms in areas such as public speaking and team building are highly valued in the corporate world. Nilai UC's Enrichment for Life scholarship scheme is to encourage more students with these skills to apply for private higher education," says Tengku Shamsul.
For instance, if a school leaver has exemplary extra-curricular achievement at state / national / regional level events, they will be eligible for a 100% waiver on tuition and accommodation fees under the Nilai UC Extra-Curricular Excellence Scholarship. Of course, Nilai UC also rewards high scorers in the examinations. Students who score 10As in SPM or 3As in STPM or 6As in UEC will be eligible for the Nilai UC High Achiever Scholarship.
Students who have been office bearers in clubs/societies/uniform bodies will also be entitled to a 30% tuition fee waiver for Foundation programme and/or 10-25% tuition fee waiver for a Degree programme under the Nilai UC Enrichment for Life award. The Nilai UC Merit Scholarship similarly rewards students who scored 6As in their SPM or achieved a CGPA of 3.0 (three best subjects) in STPM or 14 points (six best subjects) in UEC.
"This scholarship scheme has something for almost every student who excels in a particular field. Both academic and extra-curricular fields are covered and we are confident that Nilai UC will produce an even better grade of graduates through this scholarship scheme. I am happy to say we have received many applications and I urge students and their parents to visit our campus to find out more," urges Tengku Shamsul. "We are giving you even more incentives to further your education and we look forward to moulding you into dynamic citizens of tomorrow."
