Negeri Sembilan, Nilai, 17 Oct 2019—Nilai University signed a certificate of collaboration “Sijil Kerjasama Pintar” with Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seksyen 24 (2), Shah Alam. The official signatories were Prof Dr Roslan Zainal Abidin, Vice-Chancellor of Nilai University and Puan Hajjah Normawati Bt Tajuddin, Principal of SMK Seksyen 24 (2), Shah Alam.

“Working hand-in-hand with Nilai University will benefit our students. They could explore several tertiary academic pathways in health sciences and career options either in science or entrepreneurship,” said Puan Hajjah Normawati Bt Tajuddin.
“There’s a long list of ludicrous myth on ageing. We hope to enrol more students and groom a generation who could be a force in this field professionally,” added Puan Hajjah Normawati.
Another educator at SMK Seksyen 24 (2), Puan Alwardah Dolhalit, confidently stated students would have the necessary know-how in caring for the elderly; physically, psychologically and socially. She is the lead teacher in implementing and teaching the curriculum of Gerontology and Geriatric Services since 2009.
The School of Nursing at Nilai University adopted SMK Seksyen 24 (2) as part of the initiative to aspire more youth into the professional field of nursing. “Nursing is a rewarding career, but it requires a balance of talent, passion and skills,” said Olive Louisa Lopez, Head of the School of Nursing.
“What could be more fulfilling than a profession of caring for the sick and supporting their loved ones? We offer academic and need-based scholarships. Apart from that, we also work with hospitals, organisations and government institutions to provide sponsorships to well-deserving students,” highlighted Prof. Dr Roslan.
“It is gratifying for us to work with the teachers and students of SMK Seksyen 24 (2), Shah Alam. Here we take steps to provide the avenues and the academic pathway for students to have better career options,” Prof. Dr Roslan pointed out.
According to the Star Publication in 2018, Malaysia is at the risk of becoming an ageing population by 2020. University Malaya’s Social Wellbeing Research Centre discovered that the number of Malaysians aged 60 and above would reach approximately 3.5 million in 2020. The number will increase by another 2.8mil to a whopping 6.3 million in 2040 - about 20 per cent of the population.
Recently, over 70 students from SMK Seksyen 24 (2), Shah Alam participated in a half-day talk on mental resilience and an introduction to human anatomy at Nilai University. Students also took part in some hands-on activities such as positioning patients in bed and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). They also visited the labs and high fidelity simulation rooms at the School of Nursing.
The School of Nursing at Nilai University offers the Diploma in Nursing and Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Nursing. Students could complete the Diploma of Nursing in 3 years and the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Nursing in 4 years.
To ease the financial burden of families, Nilai University offers a full scholarship or sponsorship on the tuition and accommodation fees. However, Nilai University will assess all applications based on the following criteria:
- Academic achievements or
- Family’s financial background
- Leadership roles in clubs or societies
- Athlete participation in state or national level.
