The Importance of Ethics and Integrity

Nilai U students and staff got to learn more about the importance of Ethics and Integrity from ICAEW speaker.

“Ethics isn’t something you can touch or feel. It’s the values and principles which are acceptable to society,” explains Elizabeth Higgs, Ethics and Integrity Manager in the Integrity and Markets Team at International Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW). She was speaking to students, staff and industry representatives at a luncheon organised by Nilai University (Nilai U) and ICAEW to touch on the importance of ethics and integrity in today’s business environment. “Every day that you open the newspaper, you are faced with yet another epic scandal,” underlines Higgs.

Higgs is also the secretary to the ICAEW Ethics Standards Committee and specialises in ethics having previously worked in an advisory capacity on ICAEW’s ethics and anti-money laundering helplines, giving practical advice on both subjects. During her talk, she gave various examples of the types of problems she had to deal with it and the importance of maintaining objectivity when dispensing necessary advice and solutions. She also discussed at length a new report from ICAEW and the University of Leeds that explores the challenges of instilling ethics in an organisation. Higgs also gave insights on how to develop a lasting culture of integrity and during an extended talk to the students (later at a forum), she dwelled into a number of case studies with the students prompting lively debate over areas of ethical and moral ambiguity.

Nilai University regular invites guest speakers to lecture on a wide range of topics to further expand the minds of its young charges. These events reflect Nilai U’s blueprint for success philosophy that emphasises character building and holistic development to go alongside strong courses backed up by industry internship. Such talks by renowned speakers ensure that Nilai U students are instilled with the right values and principles and also ensure that they have a strong moral compass to guide them beyond what has been taught in the classrooms.
